Sympathy Expressions

Sympathy expression is an expression or feeling of pity and sorrow when we know and see someone or people are unlucky or have trouble and in bad condition. By expressing sympathy, we want to show our concern of carefulness on other people's condition.

How can we give sympathy expression to someone???

We express it directly to him/her orally or we can use a letter or card by post also by short message service (SMS), e-mail, television, and newspaper if he/she who got the trouble is far from us.


Here are some expressions we can use to show our sympathy :

  • That’s too bad.
  • That’s dread full.
  • How dread full!
  • I’m sympathy with you.
  • I’m so sad to hear that.
  • I can sympathy.
  • I know your feeling.
  • I know what you feel.
  • Oh no....!
  • Oh dear.....!
  • I’m sorry to hear that.
  • Oh, that’s awful!
  • How terrible!
  • I’m sorry to know it.
  • I express my condolence.
  • Oh dear, I know how it feels.
  • What a terrible situation for you!
  • Poor you!
  • What a shame/pity!
  • You must be very upset.
  • Please accept my condolences.
  • You have my deepest sympathy.
  • I’m sorry for what’s happened.
  • Oh you, poor little thing.
  • Look! This is not the end of the world.
  • How pity you are!

So, from the examples above, we have known how to giving sympathy to someone who in a bad situation. 
However, for the person who get the sympathy from people around also must give his or her responds about the sympathy that has given.
You can share your responds by saying :
  • Thank you.
  • That’s very kind of you.
  • God gives and God take away.
  • That’s life.
  • It’s God will I suppose.
  • There’s nothing that can be done about it.
  • That’s so sweet.
  • Thank you very much.
